Critics gave Godzilla: King of the Monsters mixed reviews when it opened in theaters on May 31, 2019. They reason that Godzilla's recovery time will be slowed down if they don't use a nuclear weapon to expedite the procedure. When Serizawa detonates the bomb manually, Godzilla is revived and his strength is increased.

Emma believes Ghidorah and the other Titans' devastation will be much worse than anything humanity could achieve, but Jonah ignores her. Orca gets stolen by Madison. When Madison arrives at Fenway Park, she accidentally transmits a frequency that soothes the Titans. Ghidorah attacks Boston's Orca. Godzilla comes to attack him with Monarch personnel's help. Mark leads a team to rescue Madison and flee the city as Godzilla's radiation levels rise, threatening a nuclear explosion. To assist Godzilla, Mothra is stopped by Rodan; she beats him but is damaged.

Rodan was characterized as a "bit of a rogue...you never quite know where his loyalties lie" by Dougherty. The filmmaker also defined Rodan as a "massive A-bomb" that provides "speed and ferocity." Rodan was designed by Amalgamated Dynamics and Tom Woodruff Jr. The Rodan pursuit scene was the first pre-viz clip developed to be used as a pitch to Legendary.

As a result of his investigation, Dougherty identified several "scary, predatory moth species." "...the approach for Mothra is to create an insectoid, huge creature that looks believable from every angle, and especially in motion." he said. Mark proceeds with Serizawa, Ilene, and Coleman toward Godzilla’s location in an effort to reawaken him, although it is emphasized that it may take years for his recovery process to properly get him back on his feet. Because Titans like Godzilla feed on radiation, scientists think they can use a nuclear to repair him quicker. However, the sub’s weapons systems is out after receiving heavy damage, so Serizawa has the option to carry the nuke down there personally and set it off. He says goodbye to his comrades and makes his way up to Godzilla, the closest he has ever been to him. He caresses a barely awake Godzilla before saying him farewell and detonating the nuclear, sacrificing himself. Soon, Big G emerges more strong than before, and he launches his atomic breath into the sky.

That her initial plan went awry, and that the Titans are taking them to even more tragedy, had finally dawned on Emma by now. As a result, Madison has branded her mother a "monster." As Fenway Park and the rest of Boston have been evacuated, Emma informs Jonah that they can transmit a frequency via the Orca, but Jonah looks away. When Madison takes the Orca and proceeds to Fenway Park, she emits a frequency powerful enough to draw the Titans there. Mark informs the Monarch team that Emma created the Orca using Godzilla and human frequencies, so humanity is fighting alongside the Titans. They also see Godzilla emitting a huge nuclear pulse and about to explode. Mark travels into the city to rescue Madison, and they ultimately come upon Emma, who has escaped from Jonah to save her daughter. Madison has gone to their old house, and they find her unconscious but alive, under the rubble.

Godzilla and Ghidorah are back at it, with the three heads gnawing on Godzilla's flanks. Webbing the three heads of Godzilla is done by Mothra, who is seen in the sky. Rodan reappears and assaults Mothra, almost tearing her head off until she outwits him and brings him down with a stab of her stinger into his shoulder. Mothra joins Godzilla's side as Ghidorah continues to weaken the monster. The monster unleashes his lightning and vaporizes her, but Godzilla is revived by the essence of Ghidorah.

In a fury, Godzilla rises to resume fighting his foe. Meanwhile, the humans want to get the heck out of Boston, but Emma believes she must redeem herself for what she began. She refuses to board the plane out of town, even though Mark and Madison beg her to. She steals a van and uses the Orca to entice Ghidorah. He blasts her, only knocking her out of the van, but buying Godzilla time to build his nuclear pulse. “Long live the king,” Emma says before she dies. Skyscrapers melt and everything else catches fire. Finally, Big G sends a tremendous blast toward Ghidorah, first to singe off his wings and then to take out his two side heads. It appears Ghidorah's head emerges from the smoke after one more blast... Except it's in Godzilla's mouth, and he kills it.

Later, in Isla De Mara, Jonah and his men are led astray by a man who offers them a head belonging to Ghidorah. Jonah says he intends to take it and use it for an unspecified purpose.

Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter Madison are kidnapped by eco-terrorist Alan Jonah and his team several years after Godzilla first appeared in San Francisco, and they plan to use a device she invented called The Orca, which emits frequencies used to communicate with Titans, to reawaken King Ghidorah. To show Jonah what it's capable of, Emma uses it to train an untamable Mothra pup.

Emma's ex-husband Mark has joined Monarch's team of scientists and soldiers to stop Jonah, but Emma has already freed Ghidorah. Godzilla's first battle with the beast ends in a bloodbath. In order to rebalance the Earth, Emma has been working with Jonah. Before battling and losing to Ghidorah, Rodan murders an entire squad of troops. The three-headed dragon then rises to power, inspiring the other Titans to wreak havoc.

Things are being set up for Godzilla to fight Kong while a Mothra egg is found. Jonah, on the other hand, gets one of Ghidorah's heads to use as a test.
